Kids' Blood Tests, the parent guide
  • We work alongside your GP and specialists
  • One number rarely tells the whole story
  • No testing for testing's sake

What is in the guide

Eleven pages, in two parts. Read part two first if a blood test is already booked.

Part one

The ranges

  • Iron, vitamin D, zinc, copper, B12, folate, thyroid and inflammation, with what labs commonly flag printed beside what we look for
  • What low can look like in a child, which is usually the part parents recognise first
  • The three things that shift every number on the page: age, inflammation, and how the blood was collected
  • What to keep the same between tests, so this result and the next one can actually be compared
Part two

Getting the test done

  • Who to ask for when you ring the collection centre, and when to ring
  • Numbing cream, including the timing most families miss
  • How to hold your child, and the position that lowers distress
  • What to say at each age, and the two things worth leaving out
  • What to do in the ten minutes after, and what to change if it went badly
Everyone says it's common. You don't think your child is thriving.

If your child's results came back normal and they are still not sleeping, growing, concentrating or shaking off the bugs going around their class, this is the gap the guide covers.

A lab reference range answers one question: is this child in medical danger right now. We work with a second question alongside it: is this child in the part of the range where children sleep well, grow steadily and shake off the winter bugs going around their class.

Why we made it

We use pathology and targeted testing to work out what matters for a child, rather than guessing or handing over a long supplement list. We work alongside GPs and specialists, and we write to them.

The ranges in this guide are the ones we work with in clinic. The guide explains the reasoning behind each one rather than asking you to take them on faith, and it says plainly where the evidence is strong and where it is not.
