You’ve tried more fibre and more water. It hasn’t fixed it.
A four week plan for constipation in adults and children. What normal looks like, a daily rhythm that works with your gut, and the foods with the best research behind them.
Where should we send it?
Five pages, free.
- We work alongside your GP and specialists
- No more foods taken off the list
- No testing for testing's sake
What is in the plan
Five pages. Start with the daily rhythm and the food steps, and give them four weeks.
Where you are now
- What normal actually looks like, and why how easy it is matters more than how often
- The Bristol Stool Chart, so you can find your own or your child’s starting point
- The signs in children that are easy to miss, including the soiling that is really overflow
- When to see a doctor rather than work through a plan
What to change
- The daily gut rhythm: the cleaning wave between meals, and the push your bowel makes after breakfast
- The position that straightens the bowel, and what to use for small children
- The foods with the best evidence, with a workaround for each one if it is hard
- The questions we ask when four weeks has not been enough
- A four week tracker to fill in one line a day
I’ve tried everything, and I’m still struggling.
Constipation is one of the most common reasons families come to see us, in adults and children alike. Most people arrive having already been told to eat more fibre and drink more water.
This is what we start with instead. It is the same plan we give in clinic, and it works from how the bowel actually times itself rather than from adding more of the same.
Why we made it
Every step in this plan has research behind it, and the plan names it. Two green kiwifruit a day matched prunes and psyllium in trials with fewer side effects, and sits in the 2025 British Dietetic Association guidelines. The daily rhythm comes from what is known about the cleaning wave between meals and the push your bowel makes after breakfast.
If four weeks does not shift it, page four covers the questions we ask next and the tests that answer them. Methane, inflammatory bacteria, food sensitivities, thyroid, coeliac and iron all slow a bowel down, and each one changes what we would do.
