What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a whole-body approach to individualised nutrition and lifestyle medicine that addresses the potential underlying causes of ill-health rather than focusing on symptoms. It is patient-centred, focusing on you as an individual, with unique underlying causes and health goals, requiring bespoke solutions rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Naturopathy is the application of evidence-informed nutrition and herbal medicine science combined with traditional wisdom and clinical experience in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual wellbeing.

Naturopaths operate with 6 guiding principles

  • The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

  • Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam)

  • First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)

  • Doctor As Teacher (Docere)

  • Treat the Whole Person (Tolle Totum)

  • Prevention (Preventare)

As a Naturopath and nutritionist, I use a wide range of tools, including detailed questionnaires, physical examination, muscle response testing, and laboratory testing where necessary, to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances, along with genetic, gut and environmental influences, and understand how these that may be contributing to your symptoms and health concerns. Educating and empowering clients plays a fundamental role. Becoming more informed about health options, more involved in health decisions, and more confident and capable of maintaining good health can lead to better patient health outcomes and lower costs long-term.

Who can benefit from Naturopathy?

Many chronic conditions as well as acute and day-to-day fluctuations in health and well-being can be linked to individual lifestyle and nutrition. Naturopathy can support individuals with a range of concerns such as :-

Acute immune support (coughs, colds and flus), digestive issues (such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), bloating, reflux, constipation), headaches and migraines, PMS, heavy periods, painful periods, perimenopause/menopause, genitourinary conditions (including UTIs and vaginal infections), asthma,  mood disorders, poor sleep, weight loss, stress, skin conditions, energy, aches and pains, diabetes, general wellbeing and disease prevention health goals. Naturopathy can also play an important role in supporting chronic immune conditions including autoimmune conditions and post-viral syndromes.

Functional Testing:-

Functional testing can be a helpful tool in allowing practitioners to focus on specific health concerns and create a truly bespoke plan for the individual they are supporting.

Functional testing can evaluate genetic predisposition and functional reserves, providing information about a number of bodily functions, ranging from digestion and absorption of macro and micro-nutrients to detoxification capacity, mitochondrial health, hormonal balance, inflammatory response as well toxic and allergenic load.  At The KAN Clinic, we work with a range of laboratories that have an excellent track record of consistency and accuracy coupled with professional service and commitment to ongoing research and development.

Functional testing commonly used:-

Nutritional genomics (DNA)

HTMA – Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

Comprehensive stool testing / microbiome mapping

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) breath testing

Organic Acid and Amino Acid testing (urine)

IgG Food intolerance testing (finger prick blood spot)

Hormone testing – DUTCH test (urine) for sex hormones and salivary cortisol testing

Blood tests – hormones, thyroid, liver function, various vitamins, and minerals
